Most puzzle tables are something you put away. A folding board, a mat you roll up, a lap tray that lives behind the couch. These are not that. Every puzzle table Bandpass builds is a piece of solid hardwood furniture with a recessed surface built into it, which means the jigsaw puzzle stays exactly where you left it and the table still looks like a dining table when company comes. The dining leaves go back on top, dinner happens as usual, and storage below keeps loose pieces and boxes out of sight. Each table is made to order in our Edmonds, Washington workshop on roughly a 20-week build calendar, so it is furniture first, priced and built accordingly.

A Puzzle Table You Don't Have to Put Away

The whole design turns on one thing: the play surface sits below the tabletop. Lift the leaves off, and you are looking down into a recessed vault. Lay the puzzle out in there, sort your edges, walk away. When it is time for dinner, the leaves drop back into place and the puzzle sits safely underneath, untouched. Nobody has to sweep 900 pieces into a box lid because guests are coming at six.

On the Dresden, that vault measures 54" long by 36" wide and 3¼" deep, which is enough room for a 2000-piece puzzle laid flat with sorting space left over on either side. That depth matters more than people expect. It is the difference between a puzzle that survives a week of ordinary family life and one that gets bumped apart on day two.

It is worth being honest about the alternatives, because most people arrive here after trying one. A card table wobbles and takes up floor space you were using for something else. The Dresden

Our flagship board game dining table, with a 78" by 52" dining surface over a 54" by 36" recessed vault and six player stations around the edge. This is the large puzzle table pick: the only one of the three that takes a 2000-piece puzzle with room to sort. Choose the Dresden if the table needs to seat the family for dinner every night and still be the place the puzzle lives.

The Firefly

A board game coffee table with a 30" by 30" game area, a 2½" recess and a drawer underneath. Mid-century styling, low profile, built for the living room rather than the dining room. Choose the Firefly if puzzling happens on the couch with something on the television, and if 1000 pieces is your usual size rather than your ambitious one.

The Mimosa

A hardwood playing card table at 37¼" square, with a 32½" upholstered playing surface and four matching chairs. It fits a den, a nook or a spare corner without dominating the room. Choose the Mimosa if you want a dedicated four-seat spot for puzzles, cards and the occasional game night, and you do not need it to double as the family dinner table.

Storage, Drawers and Sorting

A puzzle in progress generates clutter: the box, the lid you are using as a sorting tray, the pieces you set aside for the sky. A puzzle table with storage handles all of it in the same footprint.

• Drawers. The Firefly's drawer holds a puzzle box and its contents without anything sitting out on the floor.
• Dice bins as sorting trays. The Dresden's optional bins were designed for dice, but they work just as well for edges, corners and color groups.
• The leaves. When the dining leaves come off, they need somewhere to go. The dining room table leaf storage we build for the Dresden gives them a home instead of a hallway wall.
• The boxes themselves. The Eolian handles the growing stack of puzzle and game boxes in the same room, in the same wood.

A 2000-piece puzzle is not a one-evening project. The surface has to hold up to weeks of leaning, sliding and reaching across.

Underneath, it is solid hardwood: walnut, cherry, white oak or maple, with no veneer and no flex. Lean on the edge and nothing shifts. Every table is made to order, so the wood species, stain, dimensions and upholstery color are yours to choose. Puzzle Table Questions

What size table do you need for a 1000-piece puzzle?

A standard 1000-piece puzzle finishes at roughly 20" by 27", so the absolute minimum surface is about 24" by 30". You want more than that in practice, because you need somewhere to sort. The Firefly's 30" by 30" game area handles it snugly, the Mimosa's 32½" surface handles it comfortably, and the Dresden's 54" by 36" vault leaves room for sorted piles on all four sides.

Can you leave a puzzle set up on a dining table?

On an ordinary dining table, no, not without clearing it for every meal. That is exactly what the recessed vault solves. The puzzle sits below the dining surface, the leaves go back on top, and dinner happens as usual. It is the simplest way to store a puzzle in progress: you do not store it at all, you just close the lid. A dining room table with puzzle storage means the puzzle and the household stop competing for the same square footage.

What's the difference between a puzzle board and a puzzle table?

A puzzle board is a portable work surface, usually $40 to $100, that you set on top of an existing table and put away afterward. A puzzle table is the furniture itself. Boards are the right answer if you puzzle occasionally and have somewhere to stash one. A table is the right answer if the puzzle is a fixture in your house and you would rather not lose a room to it.

Do your puzzle tables have drawers or storage?

Yes, and it varies by model. The Firefly has a drawer beneath the game area. The Dresden has an optional dice bin system that doubles as piece sorting, plus the Leaf Keep for storing dining leaves while the puzzle is out. If you need to store the puzzle boxes themselves, the Eolian shelf is built to match.

What's the best surface for doing a jigsaw puzzle?

Matte, smooth and rigid. Matte so overhead light does not glare off the piece faces, smooth so pieces slide instead of catching, and rigid so nothing flexes when you lean in. Felt is common on portable boards because it grips, but it also drags. Our surfaces are chosen for that middle ground: enough grip to hold a piece in place, little enough drag to slide one across the table.

How long does a custom puzzle table take to build?

About 20 weeks from order to delivery. Everything is made to order in our Edmonds workshop, so that window covers wood selection, joinery, finish and the customizations you choose.
